Beautiful Things in Your Life

29 Aug

The foundation of all of our negative emotions is Fear, but it can wear many different disguises. All of our positive emotions have a foundation of Love, and it, too, wears many disguises. Here are some of them:

Where are you spending your time…in Fear or in Love?

We feel badly no matter which of the negative emotions we are experiencing. Plus, while we are feeling badly, we are blocking any of the good-feeling positive emotions from our experience. For example, have you ever felt angry and delighted at the same time? I know I haven’t. I’m not sure it’s possible to get to the good feelings without releasing, or at least setting aside, the bad feelings.

Negative emotions do serve an important function though. They point us towards something we can’t deal with or don’t understand…something that needs to be processed in order to be released. I have a theory about strong negative emotions that may help that processing, and I’ll share it with you in a future post.

In the meantime, let’s try some possibilities to distance ourselves from the negative things:

  • Go through each of  the emotions in the positive list and imagine the things that interest us, inspire us, fuel our enthusiasm, make us laugh, etc.
  • Share stories with our friends and family of those things we imagined above.
  • Make a note of 2 things we have in our life that touch our hearts or bring us peace.
  • As we are going to sleep at night, think of 2 positive things we really want to happen the next day/week.

When we spend time, imagining, talking, writing and thinking about the positive things, we have less and less time to feel badly. And that gives our positive emotions an opportunity to grow…

and beautiful things happen.

Let me know what beautiful things are happening in your life.

There’s a behavioral psychology technique that is similar to what you write about in this post. In short, the theory is based on the idea that your body can’t be stressed/anxious and also be relaxed at the same time. So by training our bodies to be relaxed while being exposed to stressful stimuli, we are enhancing our ability to successfully combat difficult scenarios. I believe this can also be accomplished by teaching ourselves to focus on positive thoughts until we naturally begin to override the negative ones (like you state in the end). Your tips are so helpful and can make a huge difference! Thanks for teaching and sharing this with others!
